Bora Bora 2005

In September of 2005 Greg and I went to Tahiti and Bora Bora for our first "romantic" vacation. We wanted to make sure we went before we had children.....just make sure it happened and didn't get bumped for a trip to Disneyland or something.

While we were there (during peak season) there was a very abnormal storm. There was an earthquake off the coast of New Zealand, which somehow made a tropical storm, which turned into a "swell" in Bora Bora. The storm lasted 3 days. One the first morning we woke up with our BEACH bungalow surrounded by water.....definitely not what we were expecting. Due to the continued storm and the fact that we didn't really feel safe on the beach anymore the Hotel Bora Bora moved us inland to a "fare". This was a 1200 sq ft bungalow that even had it's own pool. We weren't able to do much though during the storm cause most activities were water based and we couldn't go in the water. We couldn't fly out cause of the storm. We just sat in the bar and watched the 30-40 foot waves hit the reef and splash over. The waves were so high that the splash created 3-6 foot waves that destroyed much of the coral, beaches, walkways, bungalows, ect.

Here are some of the pictures:

Before the storm (this is looking out at the reef)

During the storm

Here is our bungalow the morning we were surrounded.

Here are 2 pictures of the walls that are in the lagoon to keep the beaches safe from waves from boats and jet skis and such. Obviously they weren't created to take 3 day storms.

These people lost their decks

This all being said....We are going back in August 2008 :)
